The Process of Nomination for Awards
Papua New Guinea has its own honours system, called The Order of Papua New Guinea, and it retains the Imperial (British) Honours.
The Order of Papua New Guinea awards are made each year on New Year’s Day and on Independence Day. Awards under the Imperial Honours are announced on the Queen’s official birthday holiday in June.
Members of the community are invited to nominate citizens, or non-citizens, for consideration for awards under either System. Priority is being given to nominations for awards under The Orders of Papua New Guinea for New Year’s awards.
Nominees need to have freely and generously to the common good of the community, or to a specific community or other organizations – such as church, charities, women’s or youth and sporting groups that benefit the community and the Nation. Distinguished service in professions, education, medicine, the public service and discipline forces, business, industry, agriculture or commerce, is also recognized.
Nominees need to have served in the particular field of endeavour for reasonable period of time, and rendered service above and beyond that for which salary etc. is paid. The level of awards granted to successful nominees will be determined by the National Honours and Awards Council on the basis of criteria that includes the length of services, seniority, and level of commitment.
The National Honours and Awards Council invites’ immediate nominations for awards under both The Order of Papua New Guinea and the Imperial Honours.
